What Are Security Bollards?
Bollards are short, sturdy posts installed to control vehicle access and protect people, buildings, and assets from impact. They come in fixed, removable, and automated (rising) styles - fixed bollards create a permanent vehicle barrier, removable bollards can be taken out to allow temporary access, and automated bollards rise and lower on command for controlled entry. When Are Bollards Necessary?
Bollards are necessary wherever you need to keep vehicles out of a space or protect something from being hit - storefronts and building facades, pedestrian zones, loading docks, utility and equipment areas, parking lot perimeters, and storefronts vulnerable to ram-raids. Automated bollards are the right choice when you need a vehicle barrier that can also grant authorized access on demand, such as emergency vehicle access to a pedestrian street, a secure delivery bay, or a private lane that must open for residents but block the public.
What Is Required for Bollard Installation?
A bollard install starts with a site assessment to confirm the threat level, traffic flow, and soil or surface conditions. Fixed and crash-rated bollards require a reinforced concrete footing engineered to absorb impact; removable bollards need a sleeved socket set into the ground. Automated bollards require an electrical run to each unit, a control system (keypad, remote, or integration with an existing access control setup), and safety sensors. We handle the footing, installation, electrical, and integration as one coordinated build.
